After beginning as a cellist, I trained in jazz piano and tabla at Dartington
College Of Arts (1983-87) where I gained a B.Mus, and also spent an
additional year studying with the Benarasi tabla virtuoso Pandit Sharda
Sahai. In 1991 I spent 6 months in Benares living and studying with Pandit
Kishore Kumar Mishra.
I loved the freelance performing and composing years between 1987 and
2000, working with musicians, dancers, choreographers, writers, directors, film makers, poets, and animateurs.
In 2000 I gained a PGCE, became Head of Music at Studley High School in 2002, and taught 11-16-year old musicians until 2015.
Based in the Long Mynd and focusing on composition and live music, I compose music for bands, theatre, dance, film, and multi-media projects. As an improvising jazz musician I enjoy playing all styles from swing to be-bop to jazz-funk and other contemporary hybrids. Currently playing bass
for the Southside Big Band and the Birmingham Big Band. I also play in a variety of duos and other
