After beginning as a cellist, I trained in jazz piano and tabla at Dartington
College Of Arts (1983-87) where I gained a B.Mus, and also spent an
additional year studying with the Benarasi tabla virtuoso Pandit Sharda
Sahai. In 1991 I spent 6 months in Benares living and studying with Pandit
Kishore Kumar Mishra.
I worked as a freelance performer and composer between 1987 and
2000, working with musicians, dancers, choreographers, writers, directors, film makers, poets, and animateurs.
In 2000 I gained a PGCE, became Head of Music at Studley High School in 2002, and taught 11-16-year old musicians until 2015.
Based in the Long Mynd, Shropshire, and I work as a double-bassist and pianist in all styles of jazz. I have played bass for the last few years with the Birmingham Big Band and the Garry Allcock Quartet, and work occasionally for The Stadium Big Band, Fat Chops Big Band, the Geoff Hooper stage band, and the Dragon Big Band. I also play piano with the Apex Jazz and Swing Band, the Swing Kings, and step in for numerous other small ensembles.
I also have an interest in psychology, philosophy, global politics and economics, and education. Please visit the music page, and browse my blog for views and discussion.
